Isolated Neutron Stars Discovered by Rosat

چکیده

ROSAT has discovered a new group of isolated neutron stars characterized by soft blackbody like spectra (kT ∼ 50-120 eV), apparent absence of radio emission and no association with supernovae remnants. So far only six such sources are known. A small fraction of these stars exhibit X-ray pulsations with relatively long periods of the order of 10 sec. Two very different mechanisms may be envisaged to explain their properties. The neutron stars may be old and re-heated by accretion from the ISM in which case their population properties could provide information on past stellar formation and secular magnetic field decay. Alternatively, this group may at least partly be made of relatively young cooling neutron stars possibly descendant from magnetars. We review the last observational results and show how they can shed light on the evolutionary path of these new objects within the whole class of isolated neutron stars.

Measuring proper motions of isolated neutron stars with Chandra. Constraints on the nature and origin of the ROSAT discovered isolated neutron stars

The excellent spatial resolution of the Chandra observatory offers the unprecedented possibility to measure proper motions at X-ray wavelength with relatively high accuracy using as reference the background of extragalactic or remote galactic X-ray sources. We took advantage of this capability to constrain the proper motion of RXJ0806.4−4123 and RXJ0420.0−5022, two Xray bright and radio quiet i...

On the number of accreting and cooling isolated neutron stars detectable with the ROSAT All-Sky Survey

We present limits to the log N − log S curve for isolated neutron stars, both cooling and accreting neutron stars, which are not active as radio pulsars, as observed with the ROSAT All-Sky Survey and compare it with theoretical expectations. So far, only one isolated neutron star is identified optically among ROSAT sources, namely RXJ185635-3754 (Walter & Matthews 1997). Three more promising ca...

The Magni ent Seven: Nearby Isolated Neutron Stars with strong Magneti Fields

Estimates from the current pulsar birth rate and the number of supernovae to account for the heavy-element abundance suggest that in total 10 to 10 isolated neutron stars exist in our Galaxy. Only a small fraction is detectable as young neutron stars due to their emission of thermal X-rays (for ∼10 years) or pulsed radio emission (for ∼10 years). Proposals that an old ”recycled” population of i...

Xmm-newton Discovery of 7 S Pulsations in the Isolated Neutron Star Rx J1856.5–3754

Thanks to the high counting statistics provided by a recent XMM-Newton observation of RX J1856.5–3754 we have discovered that this isolated neutron star pulsates at a period of 7.055 s. This confirms that RX J1856.5–3754 is similar in nature to the the other six thermally emitting, nearby neutron stars discovered in soft X–rays with ROSAT. The pulsations are detected at consistent periods in se...

the Gould Belt vs. the Galactic disc

We present new population synthesis calculations of close young neutron stars. In comparison with our previous investigation we use a different neutron star mass spectrum and different initial spatial and velocity distributions. The results confirm that most of ROSAT dim radioquiet isolated neutron stars had their origin in the Gould Belt. Several tens of young neutron stars can be identified i...
